My Christmas in Australia

So last year, my sister calls from Australia while the family is huddled, shivering around the fireplace to let us know that she is sunbathing on the beach. Yes, I am back home in the frigid Midwest and she is gloating how it is 85 and the water is amazing. She moved to Melbourne last year and travels all over Australia.

So this year, I did the smart thing. Since it's important to be with family for the holidays, I decided to invite myself to visit my sister! December is the time of the year when Australians take advantage of the beaches, outdoor sporting and other events, poolside barbeques and, well... you get the picture. Australia is actually also the most popular tourist spot for travelers from both Europe and North America that are escaping the freezing cold of winter.

So, having gone through this, here are a few suggestions to help you with your planning for a summer holiday in Australia.

1. Get a hotel. I stayed with family in Melbourne, but some friends of my sis's found a Melbourne cheap hotel without a problem. Having a place to stay is obviously important for any trip.

2. Find yourself a cheap flight. I found a really good one on Quantas. I managed to book it in October which helped, but generally, if you search in advance and make your dates somewhat flexible (especially on the search), you can get some great deals.

3. You don't need to bring too much. I could have packed lighter. It's warm. I didn't need the 2 sweaters I brought or the numerous pairs of jeans. To be honest, I would have been set with 3 pairs of shorts (one nice), 3 shirts (one nice) and a few odds and ends.... It's beautiful summer. This time a year, you don't need to pack too much. You certainly can leave your coat at home.

4. Be careful at the beach. Coming from the midwest, day 1 was kind of tough on me with the sunburn. I caught it in time to not get fried, but sandy white beaches will get ya if you! Use cream, drink fluids and just be careful.

5. Remember not all cities are the same climate. Around Christmas, the southern cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart for example) are nicer to visit. Brisbane and Darwin actually get more rain this time of year and is better to visit April through September when it's not as hot and humid.

That should get you started. Enjoy this amazing country! You will be back again and again.
