So last year, my sister calls from Australia while the family is huddled, shivering around the fireplace to let us know that she is sunbathing on the beach. Yes, I am back home in the frigid Midwest and she is gloating how it is 85 and the water is amazing. She moved to Melbourne last year and travels all over Australia.

So this year, I did the smart thing. Since it's important to be with family for the holidays, I decided to invite myself to visit my sister! December is the time of the year when Australians take advantage of the beaches, outdoor sporting and other events, poolside barbeques and, well... you get the picture. Australia is actually also the most popular tourist spot for travelers from both Europe and North America that are escaping the freezing cold of winter.

So, having gone through this, here are a few suggestions to help you with your planning for a summer holiday in Australia.

1. Get a hotel. I stayed with family in Melbourne, but some friends of my sis's found a Melbourne cheap hotel without a problem. Having a place to stay is obviously important for any trip.

Located in Australia's south east zone, the city of Melbourne is second only to Sydney in Australian population. Due to its many interesting attractions and places, Melbourne is a very popular tourist spot.

Some come to Melbourne for its pristine beaches, amazing national parks and aesthetic botanical gardens; while others might choose it for its fantastic attractions like the Melbourne Zoo, Flinders Street, the Royal Park, the Royal Botanical Garden, Victoria Barracks and on and on.

The truth is, Melbourne has everything a person or a family needs for a quality vacation.

When visiting this great city, finding a Melbourne cheap hotel will not be difficult. The city has plenty of luxurious hotels and an equal amount of charming inexpensive boutique hotels to cater to the more budget concious. I can assure you that you will not have to sacrifice the ammenities you have come to enjoy by paying less.

Whether you are looking for some good times or you are just trying to decide how to enjoy the next trip away from home, I would highly recommend that you consider the city of Melbourne, Australia as a vacation destination. It's not too difficult to find Melbourne cheap hotels. Many people continye to flock to this place for very good reasons. I am listing just a few of the cool things to do:

The Weiribee Open Zoo: You can get here by car or by the city provided shuttle buses that operates from the city center to and drop you off right in front of the main entrance of the zoo. Some of the animals to be viewed are giraffes and koalas (my personal Australian favorite) among the amazing and spectacular variety of wild life.

The Royal Botanical Gardens of Melbourne: This is a gorgeous garden located in an attractive area of the city that boasts abundant wonderful plants from around the world. The garden is a short drive or you can use the public transport trams.
